Almost 40 years since their first appearance in the art world,
Guerrilla Girls, the group of activist artists who always
appear publicly wearing gorilla masks and adapting
dead women artists names, came to Athens and the WOW
(Women Of The World) Festival, for the first time,
in March 2023 invited by
the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.
Their exhibition was entitled: The art of behaving badly.
Their works, many of which are internationally aclaimed
and have been exhibitedat the largest art museums of the West,
pose contemporary, pointy questions on the under-representation
of women artists in the art market and museum institutions,
as well as the under – representation of artists
belonging to ethnic and other minorities.
Curating the exhibition was inspired by
pop aesthetics and street campaign culture
which dominated the National Library’s 4th floor,
opening a dialogue between a conventional mode of exposition
and the complete debunking of it.
The relationship between original and digitally reproduced,
the equilibrium between prints in a variety of sizes and textures
and video art, as well as the use of materials inspired by
the connotation of slang language for female genitalia
were a few of the synthetic axes in the exhibition design
of The Art of Behaving Badly.
