Callas’ legacy is her voice and interpretations,
it is the myth being cultivated to the present day,
accompanied by any objects left behind after her passing.
Τhe first in the world, Maria Callas Museum invites visitors
to an exciting journey through her life and work,
in an experiential way that then gives space
to a more pragmatic understanding.
Callas Museum is hosted in a four storey neo-classical
building of 1.000 m², in the heart of Athens city center.
The permanent exhibition is developed in two storeys,
beginning at the second floor.
There, visitors can walk through a path
of theatrical soundscapes,
in which one can feel the depth and uniqueness
of Callas’s voice and performance.
Set design draws inspiration from Callas’ emblematic performances
as well as the work of important opera directors.
In the first floor,
the exhibition continues in a more museum-like way.
Here, visitors are offered a hands-on experience, being left to choose
the depth to which one wishes to get involved
with the information available,
discovering authentic artefacts and rare audiovisual material
from collections and institutions around the world.
Using a detailed timeline, one can learn more about
important aspects of the soprano’s life, such as her studies,
her mentors, the important people of her life,
even her relationship with fashion and art.
The main tool of narrating, in this floor, consists of quotes,
hers and others on her.
